Last week on December 11, 2008, a cold core upper level low pressure system moved across the Deep South in the wake of a strong cold front that produced heavy rains, severe storms, and tornadoes. Places like Houston, Texas; Baton Rouge, Hammond, and New Orleans, Louisiana; and Hattiesburg Mississippi all experienced a very rare snow event.
By the time the low approached Alabama, dry air entered the east side of the circulation where the cold air was present. As a result, the area of Alabama that received snowfall was relatively small. Snow fell in Northwest Alabama counties including Lamar, Fayette, Winston, Marion, Franklin, Colbert, and Lauderdale.
The highest snowfall total I found was Hackleburg in Marion County which received 4". Phil Campbell in Franklin County received 3". The NWS Huntsville and NWS Birmingham both posted summaries of the event.
Alabama Storm Chasers made some video of the event:

Hey Mike,
Just FYI. I know I'm late commenting, but we put a lot of extras on our blog (that we actually update now) that aren't on our website. There were multiple posts, but here is the one with pictures and additional snowfall totals.

We revamped the site a month or so ago, so the RSS feed changed. That's probably why the little feed in your Blog List thinks we've been slacking. The actual web address is still the same, though.
Hope all is going well down there in Vinemont. If you ever see anything interesting or take any pictures, shoot me an email or send me a message on Facebook...if you want to. We're usually pretty desperate for any reports we can get. :)

Thanks Daniel for the update! Wow... great job capturing the event on the blog! I will keep in touch!
Haha. You didn't have to make a brand new post or anything. We do look forward to hearing from you!
