Alabama received beneficial rain last night as a squall line followed by a large area of moderate rain passed through the state. The three year long drought was officially over a few weeks ago, but last night's rain will hopefully help bury it further into history.
Here are a few NWS official rainfall totals from North and Central Alabama as of 11 a.m. from the MesoWest site.

As of 5:30 p.m. this afternoon there have been three reports of tornadoes in Missouri and one in Illinois according to the Storm Prediction Center. Information is still coming in from these areas.
Temperatures have risen to record high levels this afternoon across the South and the Midwest.
A few highs include:
Looking east from the Hudson Bridge on US 31 at 3:52pm Christmas Eve
As the storm passed over Decatur where I was at work, the skies were very suspicious, but there was no visual indication at that point of a wall cloud or of anything that would produce a tornado a few minutes later in Belle Mina.
Storm survey by the NWS Huntsville
"The tornado developed in a forested area just east of Interstate 65 north of Garrett Road. Trees toppled onto a vehicle being used by hunters. The tornado tracked through a cotton field for about 1/2 mile before intensifying to EF-1 strength destroying two single wide trailer homes. One was lifted off its foundation entirely with debris found several hundred yards downwind. Fortunately, no occupants were in either location."
Explaining a No-Warning Tornado - Brad Huffines, WAAY 31 Huntsville
"The Christmas Eve tornado in Belle Mina, while not a complete surprise, received no tornado warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville, nor from television stations in North Alabama except for WAAY-31 and a ‘Strong T-storm Advisory’ on the screen as was issued from the NWS as a Significant Weather Advisory."
Survey confirms two tornadoes - Montgomery Advertiser "HUNTSVILLE -- Storm survey teams from the National Weather Service confirmed storm damage in Limestone and Walker counties were caused by two small tornadoes. The twisters on Christmas Eve packed 100 mph-plus winds butcaused no injuries or deaths. In Limestone County, an EF-1 tornado damaged houses and property in the Belle Mina community.A second twister, rated EF-0, moved into central Walker County.Meteorologists at the Birmingham office said roofs were ripped off metal structures and several trees were uprooted about 4 miles southwest of Jasper."
NWS Confirms tornado - Athens News-Courier The National Weather Service Office in Huntsville confirmed at late afternoon Thursday that it was an EF-1 tornado that struck north of Belle Mina 24 hours earlier.By Karen Middleton
karen@athensnews-courier.comForecaster Andy Kula said that between 3:33-3:35 p.m. Wednesday a twister came down in woods off Garrett Road, where it uprooted and downed several trees, and remained on the ground for 1.6 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards and maximum wind speeds between 86 and 110 mph.
I planned on staying away from the blog today but I want to give a quick update on yesterday's storms. Severe parameters seemed to be very marginal. Instability, especially, was very limited. However yesterday was one of those days that proves that if there is enough shear in the lowest part of the atmosphere, tornadoes can and do occur even with marginal instability. As James Spann and J.B. Elliott often say about severe weather, "Expect the unexpected".
Two tornadoes have been confirmed by the National Weather Service, one near Jasper in Walker County and one near Belle Mina in Limestone County.
Here are summaries from Huntsville and Birmingham NWS offices:
HUN: N Belle Mina [Limestone Co, AL] nws storm survey reports TORNADO of F1 at 24 Dec, 03:33 PM CST -- two unoccupied mobile homes destroyed. two large tractor sheds destroyed. large trees uprooted. tree blown over on car at residence. one wall collapsed at small farm home.
BMX: 4 Sw Jasper [Walker Co, AL] nws storm survey reports TORNADO of F0 at 24 Dec, 04:32 PM CST -- vcnty of cr 124 and hwy 69. damage to roofs on two metal sheds. 4 pine trees uprooted.

My sister's plane landed at 3:30.
No, it is not "snowing in the pines" like the old Alabama song proclaimed. Instead a nasty squall line is bearing down on us. Fortunately there have been no severe warnings or reports in our area.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Last week on December 11, 2008, a cold core upper level low pressure system moved across the Deep South in the wake of a strong cold front that produced heavy rains, severe storms, and tornadoes. Places like Houston, Texas; Baton Rouge, Hammond, and New Orleans, Louisiana; and Hattiesburg Mississippi all experienced a very rare snow event.
By the time the low approached Alabama, dry air entered the east side of the circulation where the cold air was present. As a result, the area of Alabama that received snowfall was relatively small. Snow fell in Northwest Alabama counties including Lamar, Fayette, Winston, Marion, Franklin, Colbert, and Lauderdale.
The highest snowfall total I found was Hackleburg in Marion County which received 4". Phil Campbell in Franklin County received 3". The NWS Huntsville and NWS Birmingham both posted summaries of the event.
Alabama Storm Chasers made some video of the event:

This has been a week of storms, tornadoes, floods, fog, and possibly even some snow across North Alabama. Let's take a break and reflect back a few weeks and take a look at the beautiful foliage on Green Mountain near Huntsville.
These pictures were shared with me by my friend Tammy and were taken by Kris. Thanks for sharing!
This a clip of coverage before and after two tornadoes struck Walker County early yesterday morning. I was not able to capture all of the coverage because storms in my area knocked out my televison signal for a little while.
Thanks to my friend Terri Featherston for sharing these pictures of flooding in the Hampton Cove area of Madison County. With all of the talk of tornado damage and snow potential, flooding has been an issue in some areas. As noted yesterday, many areas of Northwest Alabama and the Tennessee Valley region received in excess of four inches of rain yesterday. Rain has continued today with and additional inch or more already reported in many areas.
Heavy rainfall across Alabama has prompted the NWS to issue flood watches for North Central, Northwest and East Alabama. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway.
Let it snow?
It is a very windy, cold, and wet Thursday morning across North Alabama. An additional 1.21" of rain has fallen overnight. Since the rain began on Tuesday evening, 4.23 inches has fallen.
The temperature this morning is 39 and the dewpoint here atop Lacon Mountain in North Cullman is 37. There is a strong temperature gradient across the state. The temperature over in Gadsdaen is 54.
The big story today is obviously the possibility of snow. Cullman County schools made the decision yesterday to dismiss students at 1:00 this afternoon. That made my boys very happy but they will be even happier if the snow materializes.
Last night snow fell in Southeast Texas in places like Galveston and Houston. This morning Jason Simpson of ABC 33/40 is reporting snow has advanced as far east as Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
One of the ABC 33/40 Skywatchers has reported that a relative in Hammond, Louisiana is reporting thundersnow and 33 degrees.
Snow does appear likely across portions of Northwest Alabama.
James Spann provides an excellent forecast discussion here.

Snow is the buzz and the big question tonight in the Mid-South tonight. I am confident that the answer is "yes", there will be snow. Confidence is low regarding exactly how much and where it will occur. Models show a cold core upper low pressure will advance northeastward from eastern Texas through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. These systems deliver their own cold air from above.
There is a winter storm warning for much of Mississippi and a winter storm watch in northwest Alabama. One to three inches of snow is expected in these areas. These systems are very difficult when it comes to predicting specific details regarding the amount of accumulation and exact placement of the heaviest snow.
Based on historical analogies, I would not be at all surprised if there is a narrow band of six inches or more of snow somewhere in these watch or warning areas.
The best discussion of the forecast issues I have seen tonight is by Justyn Jackson, a meteorology instructor at Mississippi State University.
He says this about the forecast for Starkville:
"Although the upper low will not be directly over us, very strong upward motion will cause dynamic cooling to occur. This will allow the temperature profile to cool enough for wet snow to begin after 11 a.m. in Starkville. Surface temperatures will likely remain just above freezing so it may be initially tough for snow to stick on the warm ground. However, given the impressive vertical motion forecast by all the models, a burst of heavy snow is likely, which will likely allow a thin layer of snow to cover the ground. When this occurs, it should be no problem for additional snow to accumulate on the surface. Additionally, with a heavy burst of snow, the surface temperature should begin dropping and be around 33 by early afternoon. The heavy snow may continue through most of the afternoon before tapering off around 5 p.m."
Stay tuned for more tomorrow!
